When someone makes you look bad at work

When someone makes you look bad at workWhen someone makes you look bad at workIf you work anywhere you likely have had a colleague try to make you look bad. Most of my clients have had to struggle with this. It is disempowering and injects a fear of losing your job which ultimately leads to a fear of losing people who you love. This is where executive presence is crucial. This is where you dont react at all.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreThis is where you just pause, stare at them for a count of five and then ask, Are you trying to make me look bad? That will stop them dead.Call them out with curiosity for exactly what they are doing. Dont characterize them, get angry or defensive. Simply ask them if what it looks like they are doing is in fact what they are doing. If they deflect back to you say, Ok, I wanted to get clarity on that because for a minute it felt like you were tryin g to make me look bad. No one can argue with how you feel. This scenario gives you a few moments to re-center yourself, for people on the periphery to validate in their minds what is truly happening, and for the other person to feel embarrassment for their behavior. Then move on to what is important about what you are doing without defending what youve been accused of.Wishing you the freedom of executive presence today. This article first appeared on Maryleegannon.com.You might also enjoyNew neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happyStrangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds10 lessons from Benjamin Franklins daily schedule that will double your productivityThe worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs10 habits of mentally strong people

AI Learns to Forget

AI Learns to Forget AI Learns to Forget AI Learns to ForgetWe sentient beings do leid spend our lives collecting, storing, and regurgitating every experience that has passed through our sensory organs. If we did, wed know every leaf our eyes had ever set on, every whisper and every roar that had ever reached our ears, every fact or face wed ever come across. Wed remember every detail equally and use up our finite memory banks.Thankfully, not everything sticks, and that which is not repeated disappears from our memory, or is stored in more remote vaults. Though often overlooked, the ability to forget, and to forget wisely, is crucial to our intelligence and our survival. This is one area where flesh and blood still towers over machines. Artificial intelligence systems do not know how to efficiently forget what is unimportant.A new computing technology mimics some aspects of human thought by learning how to forget unimportant memories while retaining more vital ones. Image Purdue Engin eeringFor now, that is. Researchers at Purdue University have learned how to use a quantum material, samarium nickelate, to create a device that will know what to forget. It emulates the learning and forgetting habits of animals. The researchers have used what theyve learned of this material to create algorithms that can be applied to efficient, practical lifelong learning, as they call it, for the world of artificial intelligence.Currently, the only forgetting neural networks do is the disastrous kind. For most of the algorithms that are available, if they have already learned a data set and you try to show them a new data set, they incur catastrophic forgetting, says Kaushik Roy, a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and head of Purdues Nanoelectronics Research Laboratory. From a neural computing point of view, we may not have enough memory to remember everything. In an environment where we do incremental learning, where we keep on learning new things, it is very, very important to be able to forget. The key to forgettingand forgetting the right thingsis samarium nickelates ability tobreathe. Professor Shriram Ramanathans team at Purdue showed that when it is bombarded with hydrogen protons its conductivity increases, and when it is subsequently exposed to air its conductivity goes down. But the lattice structure of the materialand its overall conductivitychanges every time its exposed to hydrogen protons. This breathing sort of phenomenon gives rise to this conductivity change, says Priyadarshini Panda, a researcher at the universitys school of electrical and computer engineering, who worked on the project. That conductivity change is what we are able to utilize in our computing model to do this learning to forget. Its because of this adaptive, life-like respiratory behavior, or habituation, that Panda and her fellow researchers have decided to call the devices organismoids. After creating their first organismoid with the samarium nickelate, they em ulated the materials unique ability to create both algorithms and an electronic spin-based device that can be used with conventional hardware. The resulting device uses current, instead of hydrogen protons, to change conductivity. Though the algorithms could be used with any computer, greater forgetting efficiency can be achieved with the hardware device.Though Roy and Panda were inspired by our own excellent capacity for memory loss, they hope their algorithm will help artificial intelligence systems forget things better than humans can, making them smarter than we could ever imagine. When we learned to fly, we studied how a bird flaps its wing. But now we have a 747 which goes half way around the world and carries a payload of 400 passengers plus baggage, Roy says. We want to do better than the brain, go faster than the brainhowever, it may not do exactly what the brain does.Michael Abrams is an independent writer. How to Explain Why Youve Been Job Hopping

How to Explain Why Youve Been Job HoppingHow to Explain Why Youve Been Job HoppingHow to Explain Why Youve Been Job HoppingIf youre worried about coming across as a job hopper or changing jobs too often, heres how to ditch the stigma and stand out for the right reasons.Landing the perfect job, rising to the top and earning big raises and benefits are a dream come true, especially if all are achieved at the same company. Sometimes though, staying with one employer doesnt work out. Whether due to personal health or family concerns, business ventures gone sour or industry-wide layoffs, its best not to bounce from job to job, otherwise known as job hopping.Jumping from one venture to the next within short time spans tells the employer you arent willing to commit. Or maybe when a hiring manager sees frequent job changes on a resume, they infer you are a bad employee and companies dont want to keep you around for the long haul. On the other hand, explaining why youve had various short-term opportunities isnt very difficult. There are several techniques to draw attention away from your job hopping history. Before sweating in front of the hiring manager, try these simple techniques to explain your frequent job changes to ease the job hopper stigma.Optimize your resume. The first step to explaining your various opportunities and frequent job changes is by not drawing attention to them in the first place. Most resumes list experience, education and achievements chronologically, placing most recent qualifications first. While this is the best format for most job seekers, listing your vast experience may kill your chances for an interview. Focus your template on skills, achievements and abilities rather than time. This format is called a functional resume.Include a career summary and areas of expertise. Show hiring managers and recruiters you know your stuff and mean business. Career summaries should be written in paragraph or bulleted form, include between five to ten sente nces, include no more than five lines of text and focus on your top abilities. Areas of expertise are top skills (nine to twelve), formatted within a table (without borders) and bulleted. Tailor the summary and areas of expertise to each specific job.Draw attention to skills, abilities and achievements. The next step is organizing your experience and achievements. This is done with one of two formats grouping positions and descriptions according to skill sets or creating key skills assessments with each position (no description) at the bottom. For example, using the first technique, marketing and digital communications experts could divide their experience into three categories advertising, marketing and digital communication. List the appropriate positions, descriptions and notable achievements under each section. Feel free to use the dates or not.On the other hand, creating a key skills assessment fits with positions detailed similar descriptions. Remove all job descriptions and a dd them to a master list. Delete repetitious information, and rewrite it using action verbs and achieving words. Format the list into bullets. Each list should not have more than six bulleted sentences. Reduce the bullets by creating more than one list and diving into subcategories, similar to the previous template. On the other hand, dont lie or hide the facts.Drawing their attention to your abilities rather than your multiple job history isnt the same as lying or hiding information. Never lie or hide information about job hopping from potential employers. They will learn the truth sooner rather than later. Prepare yourself for the inevitable. Once youre in the interview, someone will ask why youve been changing job frequently within a short period of time.Another question will be Did you like your last job? The only way to answer either question is with absolute honesty and tact. Be transparent. Explain that the company downsized, went out of business or moved out of town. These a re the easiest scenarios to explain. On the other hand, if you were the catalyst, explain why you left the job. I felt my skills and abilities werent utilized to their furthest extent. Or you can explain that the positions werent the best fit. Dont be deckung about changing jobs too often or try to place blame. Explain the facts honestly, accurately and without bias.Draw attention to professional development and skills.Explaining your reasons for leaving a job is great. Just dont focus too much on the explanation. Give a short, concise explanation and steer the conversation towards your abilities. For example, after explaining how you felt your skills werent utilized, start describing those skills and achievements. I felt my skills and abilities werent utilized to their fullest extent. Recently, I took a five week seminar on social media marketing and analytics. This allows me to design online campaigns and determine their effects on sales. This also is a perfect opportunity to list new skills and abilities learned from working with different companies. Choose one or two projects you successfully completed. Describe those achievements and contributions. Dont pat yourself on the back. Show the hiring manager what you did for the company and what you can do for their business. Focus on how you can bring value to the potential employer.Assure them youre there to stay.Job hopping scares hiring managers and tells them you arent willing to commit. They automatically assume you will leave this job, making them work to find another candidate. Assure them you are committed to staying and want the job. I am looking for long-term employment and think your company is a good fit because Dont be sappy or brownnose. This is a little obvious and obnoxious. If the hiring manager is still hesitant about your frequent job changes, experience or seems to not trust your intentions, offer suggestions to prove your worth. Come prepared with a list of references who will vouch for your commitments. Ask former supervisors to write letters of recommendation to bring to the interview. Some hiring managers may be open to a trial assessment. Just dont mention probationary terms until its the last possible alternative. What if nothing works?Sometimes we cannot explain our shortcomings, and it costs us several good opportunities. Rest assured, this isnt the end of the game. You may lose a few battles due to frequent job changes, but the war hasnt been lost. If you cannot find an employer to offer solid employment, there are still a few vorkaufsrechts to build your reputation and improve your marketability. Check out local talent scouts or staffing agencies. Yes, we know temp agencies arent very glamorous. They may not offer your dream job. But they do pay the bills.Staffing agencies often provide steady work at local companies. There are three main benefits to temp work. You have the option to work for several employers, but only have to place one company on your resume. This reduces the job hopping stigma. Working for various companies in multiple roles also provides important soft skills training and professional development. The most important benefit is networking. Some job seekers report finding their dream job by networking at their temp roles.Want to see how your resume stacks up? Try out our free critique todayRelated Articles

Overqualified Theres Exactly ONE Real Solution

Overqualified Theres Exactly ONE Real SolutionOverqualified Theres Exactly ONE Real SolutionOverqualified is a label that doesnt make sense, and it is often code for, We dont want to pay you all that money. However, it is within your control to shift the focus in the direction you need.If you hear overqualified more than once or twice, change what youre doing. Yes, that requires changing your resume and cover letter each time. I know that takes work I know that takes time, but if time is ticking by in your job search anyway, the following will be in your best interestUpgrade From Commodity To CustomThink about when you have looked for someone to do a job around your home painting, perhaps. Different companies came out, evaluated the property, and provided a quote. But one of those guys told you, You know, if you decide you dont want to take down that wallpaper first, we can handle that for you and make sure everything totenstill looks nice, the way you want it.At this juncture, woul d your response be, Well, it seems that youre overqualified, so I dont think were going to go with your company. That wouldnt even begin to make sense. What that one painter just did was solve a problem. No longer does he look like all the other painters. No longer do you evaluate him the same way just by the numbers. He just upgraded from commodity to custom.Heres How You Do The Same ThingBeing a commodity in job search means checking off all the boxes and submitting your resume and application whatever way the company requires. You may put in a couple keywords to match what the ad says. However, this is the first opportunity you have to take control. Find out what is going on with that company today. History is dead. Social media is now. Get on the companys Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram pages to see what theyre working on, where theyre opening a new location, or what industry award they just won for some great innovation. Make sure your resume and cover letter speak to that.Per haps in the case of opening a new location, you see its going to be a manufacturing division. The role they need to fill is Director of Operations. You are experienced enough in your field that you can anticipate problems and situations. Use your expertise dont just say you have expertise. Leverage that expertise to start to float a theory. Your cover letter can point out the risk associated with insufficient planning when it comes to launching a new manufacturing site the mistakes that can occur that will stretch out the time it takes to become fully operational. And of course, youve handled situations precisely like that in your recent work. Now, youre not just meeting the requirements. Your solving a problem (before it becomes a problem.)Interview The InterviewerInstead of asking the Internet what are the top 10 questions to bring to an bewerbungsgesprch, ask the hiring manager how he anticipates the new manufacturing site opening is going to go. Thats a specific question about a specific situation thats happening in the company right now. (Remember that painter who brought up something specific about the job you want done?)The hiring manager may say, My hope is that it goes well, especially after weve already had a few stops and starts with that. When he articulates where theyve fallen down in the past, thats where you come in, building on the theory you floated in your cover letter, or speak to a related issue that he may mention. When you move away from sitting there answering the typical questions of, Whats your greatest weakness? and steer the conversation with questions of your own that are likely to get to whats on the hiring managers plate today, now you look like a custom offering, not a commodity along with everyone else. You are the ONE offering a solution.Just like the only way YOU compare commodities is based on money, thats how the employer thinks about nearly everyone who comes in to interview. Your approach needs to be to present yourself a s the ONE offering something different and better. That doesnt solely have to do with the expertise you have. It has everything to do with the problems the employer has. Speak to those specific issues. Now, your age isnt working against you, and the salary youll require doesnt loom like some huge number. The employer hires the ONE person who solves the problem he has today.Download The 5-Day Job Search so you can learn more on how to make the instant connection you need during the interview process. (Spoiler alert its not just about looking them up on social media and seeing what their hobbies are.) Plus, The 5-Day job Search goes over exact language you can say to immediately stand out from the competition. No more being a commodity. Present yourself as custom.

Smart Things to Do While Unemployed

Smart Things to Do While Unemployed Smart Things to Do While Unemployed Maybe youre unemployed by choice. Or, perhaps you were recently laid off. Whatever the case, youre jobless, and you may be feeling a bit lost or down on yourself. But this isnt the time to give up all hope  and get lazy. In fact, its just the opposite. Its more important now than ever that you make the most of your days and be strategic about how you spend your time. For instance, youll want to focus on making as many connections as possible  and use every chance you get to network. Youll want to treat your days like you have a job to do- and once youre at your desk, begin searching for new roles, perfecting your resume, and polishing your cover letter. Here are some other smart things to do while unemployed: Find freelance work. Even if you’re gung-ho on getting a full-time remote job, there’s nothing wrong with spending a little time finding freelance work. For starters, it’ll tide you over, money-wise, until you do land the job of your dreams. And considering how expensive job searching can be (i.e., having the right business attire, commuting to and from interviews, etc.), a little extra cash can’t hurt. Plus, if you’re looking to change careers or hide an employment gap on your resume, a freelance job can do the trick to fix both of those issues! Venture out and volunteer. Volunteering is a great way to spend your time while you’re unemployed. While it might not be monetarily profitable, a volunteer gig can be great (and current) experience for your resume, help you establish new connections, and also give you an idea of what working in your field- particularly if it’s a new one- will be like. But most of all, volunteering can give you some fresh perspective on your job search, and make you realize how lucky you are as you help those who are less fortunate. Take a class. Learning a new skill is never a bad idea, especially one that you might need for a future job. So seizing the opportunity to take a class while you’re job searching can aid you to stay the course as you continue to look for work, and remind you of why you love your career in the first place. Plus, you’ll probably meet like-minded individuals in your class, which can open up fresh new networking opportunities for you. Itll also serve as a great new addition to your resume. As a member, you have access to discounts or free trials  on dozens of online courses through platforms  like General Assembly, SkillShare, Lynda.com, and The YOU Plan. Brush up on current industry events. You never know what a potential employer might ask you during a job interview. That’s why it’s important to have a working knowledge of current news in your field. Being informed about your industry, from top thought leaders to the latest breaking news, can be an asset as you answer interview questions. It shows a dedication to your field and initiative to learn more, both of which are desirable traits to employers. Get social- professionally. Sure, you love to post political rants on FB, but use your job searching time to spruce up your social media channels. Make sure that your existing profiles are private, delete anything that could be viewed in a negative light, and then start creating professional profiles instead. You might want to have a Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Google+, or even a Pinterest account that are all professional and show off your skills and qualifications. Seeing as how the vast majority of recruiters and employers do an online check of job candidates, it makes sense to put your best foot forward on all of your social media channels. Create a website. Back in the day, job seekers would show up at job interviews, armed with their portfolios showcasing their work. Today, you might have a remote job interview with an employer who is thousands of miles away. How are you going to show off your achievements? With a website. Even if you’re not tech savvy, there are easy-to-use website builders (and also companies that can build one for you on the cheap), that can showcase your previous work, awards, and accomplishments. Opt for a website that also has a blog built in so you can write daily (or even weekly) posts that can show off your expertise in your field. Network, network, network. We know, networking just isn’t your thing. Unique ways top companies help their employees manage stress

Unique ways top companies help their employees manage stress Unique ways top companies help their employees manage stress Money.  Moola.  Cash-ola. Whatever you want to call it, we all like to be compensated generously and fairly for the work we do.As nice as a big  salary may be though, it’s not the only part of a person’s job that keeps them passionate and motivated to go into work and give a hundred percent every day. There are other ways employers can motivate their teams besides a giant  raise.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In fact, when asked what makes them stay at a job, employees said  1) enjoying the work 2) having a job that fits  other areas of life, and 3) benefits were all more important factors than pay. And as for Millennials, they crave purpose more than a paycheck.Having said that, all of this reasoning  goes out the window if an employee gets overstressed â€" employees in demanding jobs may suffer from stress levels so high that it can burn even the most committed perso n out after awhile.  Top companies have realized this and are offering their employees  a variety of unconventional ways  to be and stay happy and ultimately avoid getting too stressed out  with their jobs. Here are some unique ways some  companies  are helping their employees manage stress, some of which might be familiar to you.Mental well-being offeringsSituations can occur at work that affects  an employee’s health negatively. From temporary issues like lack  of sleep and irritation to deeper problems like high blood pressure and headaches, a heavy workload can be hard on a person’s health. Many companies are seeing and responding to this. For example,  Airbnb  provides free yoga classes for their employees.  Apple  allows 30 minutes a day for employees to meditate.  Nike  offers access to relaxation rooms.Fun in-office activitiesMany people enjoy their jobs, but it could still stress them out. When they toil many hours at work, it can be a big stress-buster to get away from their desks and do something fun for a few minutes. Online storage giant  Dropbox  provides ping pong tables, the  Google  offices sport a bowling alley and a basketball court, and  Chesapeake Energy  has an indoor rock-climbing wall. And among the thousands of companies reviewed  on Kununu, 27% offer employee events as a perk. These all offer an employee a quick, easy way to get a bit of exercise and decrease their stress.Comprehensive canine inclusionSometimes help with stress has four legs.  Dog moms and dads who are able to bring their pet to work with them report greater job satisfaction and lower stress. Companies who have an open-door dog policy are online retailers  Amazon  and  Etsy,  ice cream company  Ben and Jerry’s, hotel and restaurant group  Kimpton, and consumer goods giant  Proctor and Gamble. And among all of the top rated companies  on Kununu  (companies an with overall star rating of 4 stars or higher), 9% of them are identified as pet-friendly. Not too shabby! Considering that this includes companies where allowing pets probably wouldn’t make sense â€" think factories, retails stores and the like.  In any case, the option of having pets as work, where it makes sense, is a great way to decrease employee stress with practically zero financial investment.Days off to volunteerIt’s long been said the best way to feel better about your own life is to help the less fortunate. Under this premise, companies from a variety of industries let their employees volunteer, on them. Software giant  Salesforce  permits their employees a generous 56 hours a year to volunteer, along with a cash grant the employee can bestow on the charity of their choice. Medical tech company  Stryker  gives employees up to five days of paid volunteer time. This is a win-win endeavor, as the employee gets to donate their time to a charity of their choice, and reduce their work stress, while the employer gets a renewed employee that completes  their work more productive ly.“Make-life-easier” perksTrying to handle errands and appointments while managing a heavy workload causes many employees stress, and some companies have stepped in to lighten the load.  Google, once again paving the way in unique employee offerings, gives  employees access to a concierge that handles tasks from dinner reservations to making hair appointments.  Proctor and Gamble  gives their employees a free ride to work.  Mattel  gives parents 16 hours of school-related time off so they can be present at the parent-teacher conferences and field trips without dipping into vacation time.  Facebook  has a healthcare facility on-site, so no driving to the walk-in clinic on a lunch hour for their employees. All of these help save employee time, decrease stress, and promote job satisfaction.Companies are increasingly realizing that stress is a thief of productivity and putting creative measures in place to stamp it out.  Smaller businesses, while maybe not adding a climbing wall, a re predicted to take a lesson from  these giants and implement some of these perks into their employees’ work life as well. Luckily, most of these are low cost and bring about a great deal of return in employee happiness and efficiency. The result is a more harmonious, high-functioning, happier workplace. Does your employer offer some perks you don’t want to miss anymore? Get Your Resume Noticed. The Right Way.

Get Your Resume Noticed. The Right Way. Get Your Resume Noticed. The Right Way. At Ladders we have a name for the “sent resume got no response” dilemma. We call it the resume black hole: When a job seeker sends his resume to job listings and recruiters … and never hears back. Ever. It tops the list of frustrations for most job seekers. Why does this happen? And how can you avoid getting sucked into the resume black hole? Consider what these companies are up against, says New York Times reporter Phyllis Korkki. “The Internet has made it absurdly easy to apply for jobs. This means that unqualified people are clogging the system with their wing-and-a-prayer applications,” Korkki writes in her article “Where, Oh Where, Has My Application Gone?” While there’s no way to guarantee a recruiter will get back to you, there are some steps you can take to make sure your resume gets noticed. Make a Name for Yourself We’ve heard over and over again how important it is to network, both in person and online. Ladders columnist Louise Fletcher reminds job seekers to work on a web presence as well as “join a few select message boards related to your profession,” for better networking. Use the Right Words Maybe it’s not the recruiter that isn’t getting back to you. If your resume doesn’t have the right keywords it may never get past the ATS (applicant tracking system) and onto the recruiter’s desk. An ATS can be the job seeker’s worst nightmare if your resume is not full of targeted keywords, according to Lisa Vaas, in her article The 24 Step Modern Resume â€" where she gives a checklist chock full of get-noticed tips. Stand Out, Not Outrageous A recent Career Builder survey of recruiters and hiring managers gives job seekers some valuable insight. You want to stand out, but not too far out. You certainly want recruiters to take notice of your resume. You don’t want them to email it around the office for kicks though. Here are some strange, albeit entertaining resume faux pas. Candidate put God down as a reference (no phone number). Candidate claimed to be a direct descendant of the Vikings. Candidate’s e-mail address had “LovesBeer” in it. Candidate listed “Master of Time and Universe” under his experience. Candidate’s condition for accepting the position was being allowed to bring his pet monkey to the workplace. Candidate pointed out, “I’ll have your job in five years.”

11 VETS 68% Hired or Interviewed for a Federal Job with Professional Writing and Coaching Part I

11 VETS â€" 68% Hired or Interviewed for a Federal Job with Professional Writing and Coaching â€" Part I Post 9/11 VETS â€" 68% Hired or Interviewed for a Federal Job with Professional Writing and Coaching â€" Part I Post 9/11 VETS â€" 68% Hired or Interviewed for a Federal Job with Professional Writing and Coaching â€" Part I The odds are good that you will get an interview or get hired for a federal job, if you invest in a professional federal resume writer and coach to begin your search. A quote from Sportsgambling.about.com shows that a 68% chance of success is a good bet. The site notes that “The best professional bettors would be delighted with a winning percentage between 56 and 58 percent. Yes, really. They’re wise enough to know that will produce a healthy profit over the long run.” The Resume Place, Inc. experts in writing federal resumes for military produced a study of successes among 45 federal resume service clients. All were Post 9/11 veterans who worked with us in 2014. We asked what their results were. Thirty-one clients replied. Fifteen had been hired into a federal position within six months, and 6 others had federal interviews. This is a 68 percent success rate for getting hired or interviewed. Our success rate beats the top gamblers’ risk rate of 57 to 58 percent. Each of the veterans spent an average of $700 on the coaching and federal resume writing. Twenty-one of them attained a position or got into the interview room for a job that ranged from $35K to $90K. These positions with the government are long-term and it’s really hard to get fired. The government has a 95% retention rate for most permanent Civil Service Employees. The average age of this group of Post 9/11 Vet clients was 25. Therefore, if they have a work expectancy to age 60, that mean 35 years on the job. The average yearly earnings in the government is $65,000. Therefore, the $700 initial federal resume investment resulted in a net of $2.1 million, plus excellent benefits. Additionally, if you were hired as a GS 11, Step 1, you would increase your step every two years â€" then every three years. The Cost of Living Allowances go up on average 1 percent each year. So, even if you NEVER applied for a new position, your salary would go up each year slightly with the increased steps within a certain grade and the cost of living adjustments. So the $700 initial investment will pay off substantially over your 35-year federal career. Why not invest in a professional writer and coach if you would like to obtain a federal job? Just look at the numbers, the odds and make a decision about the investment. Go with the odds, invest and land a federal job. ***** Note: Part II will present the 5 reasons your federal resume and federal job search will be much more powerful with professional help from The Resume Place, In

When you introduce yourself to someone new, what do you tell them first? Your name! Make sure your full name appears clearly in your header. Also, since your goal is for the recruiter or hiring manager to contact you, you need to provide a way to do so. Include your professional-sounding email address and phone number with area code. Your mailing address isn’t essential, though you may choose to give your city and state. Customize our trainer resume sample to easily fill in a header with your personalized information.2. What do you put on a trainer resume for your first job?You should generally list your jobs in reverse chronological order, with your newest or current position listed first, as shown on our trainer resume sample. This allows the recruiter to quickly and easily see your most recent work. There are only a few exceptions to this rule. For example, if you’re currently at a temporary or seasonal job unrelated to training, you may want to title your job section “relevant work experience” and move unrelated work to a separate section below it.3. How do you list education on a trainer resume? You should organize the education section of your resume much like your experience section, in reverse chronological order. Place your most recent degree or certification at the top. Ideally, this is also your highest level of training. Include higher education after high school. There’s no need to give high school or GPA information, and you can also leave off individual courses or training that didn’t go toward a degree or certificate and don’t add to your qualifications. See our trainer resume sample for a good example of an education section.4. How do you write about hobbies on your resume? You’re never required to include hobbies on your resume. In fact, if document real estate is at a premium, you want to leave hobbies off in favor of your summary, skills, experience, and education sections. Our trainer resume sample demonstrates how these sections can easily fill the page. However, if you h ave the room, you may want to add hobbies, especially if they’re relevant to training others or a large part of your life. To do this, simply add a hobbies section at the bottom of your document and add a short sentence or bulleted list.5. What’s an example of a great trainer resume? For an effective example of a trainer resume, see our trainer resume sample. This document shows a great way to feature skills by dividing them into multiple categories. This is especially helpful if you have more limited experience, but it works for anyone who wants to emphasize the traits and qualifications that make for a superior trainer. By using a resume builder rather than starting from scratch, you can effortlessly craft an excellent document that can get recruiters to give you a second look.

Heres What a Mid-Level Professionals Resume Should Look Like

Here's What a Mid-Level Professional's Resume Should Look Like Here's What a Mid-Level Professional's Resume Should Look Like Great experience doesn’t automatically equate to an impressive resume. Learn how to craft a resume that stands out from the crowd. As your career evolves, so too should the format of your professional resume. If you’re a few years beyond the entry-level position, it’s time to revamp your personal marketing materials to reflect this status. I recently shared with Business Insider’s Jacquelyn V. Smith a sample resume and my top tips for the mid-level professional. Here are the main takeaways: Image : Skye Gould of Business Insider.Graduate from the one-page resume.Once you’ve been in the working world for a number of years, you’ve earned an additional page of resume real estate. Use the extra space to elaborate on your recent work and professional development activities, highlighting the qualifications that are most relevant to your current job goals. Include your header at the top of both pages to keep your name and contact information accessible and top of mind.Reorder you r resume. At this point in your career, the emphasis should be placed on the relevant experience you’ve gained. Shift the “Education” section of your resume to the end of your document and focus on the skills you’ve developed since graduation. If you’ve recently completed a certification that’s important to your target role, include the acronym for the certification after your name (i.e. “John Wilkins, PMP”) at the top of the resume and include the details in your “Education” or “Professional Development” section.Include a list of core competencies. The top third of your resume should quickly sum up your skills and qualifications for the reader. Underneath your professional summary, incorporate a list of core skills that explain where your expertise lies. If a common term in your industry is often abbreviated, make sure both versions appear throughout your resume (i.e. “Marketing Communications” and “MarCom”).Describe each role’s responsibilities and achievements.Under the job title of each position, include a short description that explains your responsibilities. This could include the type and size of the projects you managed, the clients you serviced, the accounts you represented, or the team you supervised. Under each of these descriptions, include a bulleted list of your most notable and relevant contributions and accomplishments. Quantify these accolades whenever possible.Demonstrate your career progression. Ideally your resume should be listed in reverse-chronological order, starting with your current position. Dedicate more space and details to your recent work, assuming this is relevant to your job target. Your resume should tell the story of your career. If you stayed with one company for a number of years, use the role description and bullets to explain how you’ve taken on more responsibility over time.Click on the following link to view the full list of resume tips and a sample resume on Business Insider.
