Soaring Rents Are Driving Tech Workers Out of San Francisco

Soaring Rents Are Driving Tech Workers Out of San Francisco With a median monthly rent of more than $4,500, San Francisco appears to be officially shedding tech workers, who are leaving the city for locales with lower cost of living and may be taking their tech employers with them. “We see re-locations out of San Francisco increasingly,” Mehul Patel, CEO at the job search site Hired, told Bloomberg. “If you actually factor in cost of living, there are much better places to live.” Patel said just in the last year his firm has noted a stream of talent relocating from the Bay Area to places like Seattle, Denver, Austin and Los Angeles. Bureau of Labor Statistics data confirms that while job growth in the tech sector has slowed notably in San Francisco, it is accelerating elsewhere, in places like Portland, Phoenix and Seattle. In February, according to data from the real estate service Zillow, the median home value in San Francisco was $1.1 million, compared to $351,700 in Portland and $569,500 in Los Angeles, for example. “A lot of companies are opening shops outside of the Bay Area because of the candidate shortage for the skill set that they need,” Megan Slabinski, an executive at a tech-staffing firm told Bloomberg. “Looking at Seattle and Portland, you’ve got large tech hubs of candidates. There’s a great pool of talent.” Though job activity in the tech sector has cooled in San Francisco it’s important to note that it is not in decline and is still growing, just slower than in previous years.

Succeeding From Failing

Succeeding From Failing Succeeding From FailingThis is a guest post by Timothy Lee for Student Stories. No matter how big or small, weve all experienced a time when we fail. It could be notlage getting a job, failing a midterm, or getting dumped, but weve all been there. I like to remind myself with a quote from Zig Ziglar,Failure is an event, not a person. The beauty of failing is that its short-lived if you choose to. No one really cares as much of the actual failure but rather how you grew, learn and became better from the event. Heres a 100% true story that happened to me this last week for a little inspiration.I applied for a program at my school and I unfortunately welches rejected from the first round. When youre not even called back for anbewerbungsgesprch,it usually means youre not evenqualified.Refusing to accept the fact that I didnt get the interview, I decided to emaille the directors of the program to meet with them in person, to learn what parts of my application did not meet their standards.I met up with the two directors in their office, arriving 45 minutes early. Honestly, I walked in there with no expectations but as the discussion went on, it suddenly felt more and more like an interview. I recognized this familiar feel in the room. Immediately, I went into interview mode and started answering all their questions with the best stories Ive had highlighting my tenacity and persistence to hardships exactly what I was doing at that very moment with this program. The directors recognized that same attitude and characteristic from my stories and connected the dots with what I was doing with them. They were happy to say that I was very qualified and would like me to move on with their program. I went from rejected, to flabbergasted, to hopeful, to success all because I couldnt believe thatI was the failure.I could have been angry or sad but I chose to reach out because I knew failing didnt define me, it was simply another hurdle to overcome. Out of t he 200 kids that applied for this program, 100 were rejected, and only 1 chose to reach out and talk to the directors.Im not saying simply emailing the dean of Harvard to argue your rejection letter will get you in or calling human resources to try to set up another interview will land you the job in fact I was so surprised with what happened to me I started calling and texting my friends after I got out.The takeaway is this dont linger on the moments you failed, instead, learn, grow and become better from them. Take every opportunity to get better, not justfailuresbut moments ofsuccessas well. And sometimes, the coin lands your way and you get lucky with these rare moments when the thought of failing just seems impossible.Author BioTimothy Lee is a rising senior at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington.
